Description
A collection of works by Eddie Plein, an American jeweler and the father of grills. "Mouth Full Of Golds" - gold crowns, gold front teeth, gold, grills - and even diamonds and pearls - is a history book that unravels the "famous" author and his painted teeth (and that great smile that became the face of hip-hop) with photos. This book was self-published in 2021 and sold out in an instant with 400 copies, and has been reprinted in a second edition by the British publisher "IDEA".
The story follows the "Famous" Eddie Plain, his life and work, the golden age of decorative dentistry that he pioneered, and the enduring smile that made him the face of hip-hop. The book was the brainchild of Kevin Jones, Lyle Lindgren, a filmmaker and writer who has been documenting grillz since the late '80s, and friends. They conducted interviews, sourced photos, fact-checked, and handled design and art direction, resulting in the book's publication in 2021.
There's a photo of him in front of the Famous Eddie's Gold Teeth sign in Atlanta, a photo of Shirt King Phade and Dawn, a New York-based graffiti artist whose patrons included the likes of hip-hop's biggest names at the time, Exotica grills designed by Gabby Elan Jewelry, Tyler, The Creator's lower teeth, and photos of the "freaks of the earth" Nas and Kelis, who appear throughout the book. The book has it all, from the visual information told through these images to the vivid stories told through the text.
The foreword by New York rapper A$AP Ferg places Gold and Grillz in the context of his personal history and black creative culture, while music video director Va$htie, music producer and DJ Goldie, rapper and music producer A$AP Rocky, rapper Just-Ice, photographer Janette Beckman, and, for the first time in this second edition, fashion designer Marc Jacobs, all share their own stories.
