The brand name is a portmanteau of "POLITE," meaning "elegant, refined" in English, and "PIQUANT," meaning "to subtly entice someone."

The origin of their clothing production lies in the Ura-Harajuku movement and street culture that emerged in the 90s. After studying abroad in Italy, designer Sugita gained experience as an assistant designer at a domestic designer brand before going independent.
